Look for Project Administrator or Project Coordinator positions. There is a huge amount of documentation and administrative work in project managment. You can get on-the-job training and take night or online courses at the same time.
I am a Contract Administrator, and do a lot of project coordination just as part of the job. If you are a good AA and like project based work you should do really well and learn quicker this way rather than schooling alone.

Most companies require some sort of technical competency on what they do, whether it's engineering or some other field. I would check with your company to see what they require. The move from AA to project manager is a quantum leap in most cases and you may need to get an additional bachelor's degree (at least) to even be considered for the position. Be careful with PMI Certification. Some companies like that, but many are finding that that isn't that helpful in the bigger picture.

Engineering Management is subset of project management. For "Project management" there has to be a Project. Generally PM involves all of the disciplines that will be necessary to do market wants and needs and competition assessment, available plant/organizational resources, available facilities (space, power, laboratory, computer, etc), available manpower in the various disciplines that will be needed to implement any Project concept, and so on.

The actual practice of systems engineering management involves continuous cognitive zigzagging between systems engineering—the product domain—and project management—the project domain. In Engineering Management the technical discipline manager function like a project manager only in their specific disciplines when required in comparison where a PM is actively involved throughout the project process / project lifecycle.

"Project Management" people will be involved in the decision to commit to a Project, and the definition of its specifications, time, manpower, available resources and funding.

A project manager is like the coordinator and director of the project. Within that project may be an engineering team with an engineering manager. Depending on the type of project, there may be hydraulic engineering teams, electrical engineering teams, software engineering teams etc.
The link below will give you some information on what a project manager does.
