Project Firework

This past school year a teacher at the school, Kim C. and myself created an anti-bullying symposium known is Project Firework. The title, and much of the project itself, was inspired by Katy Perry’s song “Firework”. The Project consisted of a 3-day symposium that included many activities, workshops, presentations, and speakers. This project was done in our high school, and surprisingly it took off quite well. Our school of 2400 students was both cooperative and supportive throughout the entire three days. To wrap the whole project up, Kim and I saw how many schools have been doing lipdubs…and we thought what better way to get everyone working towards one goal in creating something spectacular. So, we took on the challenge… and succeeded! All of the kids got involved and learned the true meaning. This lipdub was so much more than a lipdub to Nashua High School South. This lipdub meant, to all of us, that we are a school that is starting to make a difference. And that all of us are willing to take a stand against bullying. Inside Asea Begum’s home, shelves teem with jars containing pulses, grains, spices and dried biscuits. A little girl runs in with a small plastic bottle that Begum fills with cooking oil in exchange for a few coins. Asea Begum runs a small grocery store out of her one-room house in the Mymensingh district of northern Bangladesh. The store is a primary source of income for Begum, and allows her to provide for her family. Not long ago, however, Begum and her family ate just one meal a day, consisting of plain rice and a few pieces of chili. Her children were always hungry and her husband, who pulls a rickshaw all day, was continually exhausted. All this changed when Begum received a loan of 6000 Bangladeshi Taka (about US) from her local community development committee. The loan allowed her to start a small grocery business, and thereby signicantly increase her income. After repaying the loan, she also borrowed cash to buy goats, which she raises and sells in front of her house. Begum’s monthly income is now about US, after expenses, and she has become a member of her local community development committee. These committees, made up of women like Begum, are the core of the United Nations Development Programme’s (UNDP) US0m Urban Partnerships for Poverty Reduction (UPPR) initiative.
