It is a huge task – which would require a huge answer.

Depending on exactly what you’re trying to do, I wouldn’t start in Excel, but in MS Project, which is designed better to handle these kinds of challenges. You can always export to Excel if you need to.

You need to develop a plan, at an appropriate level for 1 site, and then replicate it for each site. You might have several “flavors” of site, so you’d need a template for each flavor.

You’ll need to set up attribute codes, such as State, Crew etc. so that you slice and dice your data in different ways.

With a project of this size the project management budget should, although probably doesn’t, allow for the hiring of a professional to help you with this problem. The cost justification would be that doing the planning right could save you significant dollars in the long run.

Although creating the plan will be the first challenge, the next, and perhaps equal challenge, will be how you collect progress information and stay on-top of the project once it is underway, since I’m assuming that a delay on one site will have the potential to delay other sites as crews move around the country.

how do you write a project management plan?

Question by Jennifer S: how do you write a project management plan?

Best answer:

Answer by rlc_60504
You can look at the PMI (Project Management Institute’s PMBOK (Project Management Book of Knowledge)).

A project plan should contain each task that is needed to done in order for the overall project to be completed. Each task should have a person assigned to complete it. Each task should also have an estimated time to complete next to it. You should have a planned start date and a planned end date for each task. You also list dependencies…meaning that step number 27 can’t be started unless steps number 13 and 18 are completed first.

Once you write all of this out, you should be able to tell how long it will take to complete the project. As the project is ‘executing’, you should make sure that each task is being completed as expected and when expected. Delays in completeing a task can delay the project completion because other task dates will now need to be pushed back.

Get Microsoft Project which is a great tool for building and monitoring project plans.

Good luck.
