See Cal Poly’s new interdisciplinary, hands-on, lab-based learning facility in the College of Architecture and Environmental Design. The dedication ceremony of the million Construction Innovations Center included an open house, tours of the new facility and groundbreaking for the centers next phase, the Simpson Strong-Tie Materials Demonstration Lab. The project features a new 30000 square foot building dedicated to construction management with 12 project-based labs that emphasize Cal Poly’s learn-by-doing philosophy.

In this Autodesk University 2009 slidecast hosted by Ralph Bond, Jason Reece, technology and process development manager, Balfour Beatty Construction on BIM for government projects. In the segment Jason talks about the importance of bringing the entire AEC team (designer, contractor and owner) together early to discuss the implementation of a BIM process. He notes the value of a BIM process after construction for facilities management and maintenance. Jason ends the segment responding the question about bringing the construction contractors into the early design phase.

For starters, a project might not have any construction associated with it. Developing a new soft ware product would be one example.
In the project that does involve construction as a part of the overall project then there is a clear difference. The overall project has a project manager who deals with all aspects of the project and the project also have a construction manager who is only concerned about the actual construction and all aspects involved with that portion of the project. There would typically also be an engineering manager, purchasing manager and others who take on specific defined areas for execution.
It is important to realize that there are many variations of what a project and construction manager does. It is very dependent on the size of the project, the owner’s desire for involvement and their experience, the type of contracts involved and knowedge and ability of all involved. There are those who have an idealized idea of what a project or construction manager does or limited experience in actual project work.
