Isolating Cluster Jobs for Performance and Predictability, Brooks Davis (DCBSDCon 2009) At The Aerospace Corporation, we run a large FreeBSD based computing cluster to support engineering applications. These applications come in all shapes, sizes, and qualities of implementation. To support them and our diverse userbase we have been searching for ways to isolate jobs from one another in ways that are more effective than Unix time sharing and more fine grained than allocating whole nodes to jobs. In this paper we discuss the problem space and our efforts so far. These efforts include implementation of partial file systems vitalization and CPU isolation using CPU sets. Source: Jason Dixon

Portland’s Old Town/Chinatown (Mandarin)

Special thanks to Ann Chu and Jack Chu for providing this wonderful translation. Don’t worry if you don’t speak Mandarin. We have an English version coming soon. In the meantime, here is what’s being said: The Portland Development Commission (PDC), through a combination of financial programs, project management, construction projects, and technical expertise, helps grow businesses and jobs, revitalizes neighborhoods, helps low-income families buy or repair homes, and ensures new housing is available to people of varying incomes. As the city’s urban renewal agency, PDC uses urban renewal as a tool to help specific areas of the city realize capital projects — parks, streetscape improvements, community centers, and the like — that would not happen on their own. Urban renewal is a state-sanctioned program designed to help communities improve and redevelop areas that are physically deteriorated, unsafe, or poorly planned. The agency’s main goal is to use public funds to stimulate private sector investment, job creation and expansion of the tax base. Simply put, PDC is a customer service organization linking people and resources to help make Portland a great place to live. Old Town/Chinatown is Portland’s oldest neighborhood and one of the most diverse. This is a community that is rich in resources — its people, its buildings, its important location in the heart of Portland. Our goal is to develop Old Town/Chinatown into a vibrant, 24-hour, mixed use, urban neighborhood

Business Analysis – BA Collective – Documentation

www.bacollective.com No one likes to read documentation. And who can blame them. When is the last time you picked up a user manual? Its probably been awhile. No one even prints documentation anymore. You can maybe find an odd PDF file here or there, and then you have two choices you can print it out and kill a few trees at your own expense, or you can read it online. Most people dont do either. When people dont read documentation, its as much a reflection on the writer as it is on the reader. Thats where the Business Analyst comes in. The Business Analyst is a bi-lingual communicator. The BA speaks the language of Business and of Technology. And each language has many dialects, colloquialisms, and subtle slang in its vernacular. When the BA writes documentation, it needs to command not only the attention, but the respect of its audience. Here are three things to consider when developing documentation as a Business Analyst. First, balance Documentation Style and Substance * Well-written documentation, formatted and laid-out poorly, is not well-written documentation. * Know your audience. Who are you writing for? * Also, usability isnt just for software; its for documentation, too. Create great documentation that is easy to read. * And remember Re-usability is as important as usability. * Last, if your company/project/SDLC doesnt have a Style Guide, create one. A second suggestion is to use Microsoft Word to its Full Potential * Know the basic controls for properly

Venezuela Pioneers Alternative Fuel from Cassava Root

Venezuela may soon be able to add a new form of energy to complement its vast oil reserves. A team of engineers has found a way to convert waste products created when producing Casabes, or flat breads from the cassava root, into ethanol, butanol, isobutanol and proponal energy compounds that can produce fuel. Cassava root, popularly known as Yuca, is the third largest source of carbohydrates for human food in the world. The extract of the cassava, known as Yare, inspired the name of the project -”Yaretanol” – which brought top honors at Venezuela’s sixth annual IDEAS competition in 2008. [Antonio Hernandez, Yaretanol Team Member]: “This product, popularly known as ‘Yare,’ is really nothing more than a milky product with a high content of poisonous cyanide, and is made up of around 800 to 1200 parts per million of cyanide. That means that 2 ccs of Yare could kill an animal weighing up to 500 kilograms.” Yaretanol production is expected to generate some 1500 jobs, and produce 30 tons of fuel per day. That equates to roughly 1% of the ethanol currently being used in Venezuela. Project manager Ivaneth Silva Pernalette is keen to point out the myriad benefits offered by the cassava. [Silva Pernalette, Yaretanol Project Manager]: We are improving the environment, helping people who have this contaminant on their hands that is poisonous and then we process it. And from that process we obtain the bitter ‘Yuca’ that provides ecological benefits and makes positive contributions to

How to move from consulting to management?

Question by ksquadro: How to move from consulting to management?
I have been a project consultant for about 10 years – meaning that I work on a project and when it is over, I go somewhere else (usually with a different company). Some projects are long (2 years) and some are short (2 months), so I have had a lot of “jobs”. I want to get out of consulting and move into management with a good company.

Any advice on how to do that?

Where do you go to find the best management/upper management jobs?

Any advice on how to find the right people to send my resume to (besides online job boards)?

Best answer:

Answer by weekspot74
Since you have many job experiences and worked with different companies, maybe you should try networking. You won’t see a quick result but maybe it helps you to go to that direction.

I am not a manager, but I think manager’s work is 60% politics and 40% results. :)

Oh.. check out the high paying online job market at “the ladders” (URL below).

Good luck.

Consultancy firms top list of recruiters; fewer offers seen from financial institutions, I-banks and pvt equity firms. PART1

www.ClearedJobs.Net HR Strategist Patra Frame offers some tips and advice on what to do when you are in between jobs. Unemployment is hell and often times, when you’re unemployed for any length of time, which is not particularly uncommon especially in recession, you are saying to yourself, “Now what do I do to fill in this gap in my resume? What do I do to keep going?” Well there are some very simple answers. First of all, brush up your technology knowledge and your skills, whether you need just better knowledge of basic Office word processing types of things or whether you need more detailed real IT knowledge or specific skills within your field, now is the time. Use this time wisely. Go to the one stop at your unemployment service and see what they offer. Check out courses that might be available to you at a wide range of places and pick ones that are good and take your skills to the next level. So that is the first piece. The second piece is, you’re a member of a profession. Whether your professional groups have local chapters, big networking events, seminars or an online services you want to be sure that you are active in those professional groups. Not only will you be learning things, critical things, things that become key words on your resume, but you’ll have a chance to network, to meet people who might be helpful to you to develop those relationships. And then volunteer. Volunteering, whether it’s for some cause that is near and dear to your heart or whether it’s
