Connie Guberman has received the Safety and Resilience Award from the Canadian Urban Institute’s 2010Urban Leadership Awards program, which has been paying tribute to individuals, groups and organizations that have made a profound and lasting impact on the quality of life in Canada’s cities and urban regions. Connie has been creating safer cities for 25 years by raising awareness of and moving to end violence against women. A leader and a pioneer, Connie compiled the first comprehensive book on violence against women in Canada, “No Safe Place. Violence Against Women and Children”. She was instrumental in launching the Assaulted Women’s Helpline, developed and taught the first UTSC course on Violence and Safety, created the Women’s Campus Safety Audit Guide for the Metropolitan Action Committee on Violence Against Women and Children, facilitated large scale safety audits and conducted training to train-the –trainer in cities across Canada, and developed “Kid Safe: A Kid’s Guide to Community Safety” which was distributed to 400000 homes in the Greater Toronto Area in the Toronto Star. Guberman was a member of City of Toronto’s Safe City Committee, Task Force on Community Safety, the Working Group on the Status of Women and Gender Equity as well as a member of the Interdepartmental Working Group on Community Safety that produced “Building on Success: A Community Safety Strategy for the City of Toronto”.
