Connie Guberman has received the Safety and Resilience Award from the Canadian Urban Institute’s 2010Urban Leadership Awards program, which has been paying tribute to individuals, groups and organizations that have made a profound and lasting impact on the quality of life in Canada’s cities and urban regions. Connie has been creating safer cities for 25 years by raising awareness of and moving to end violence against women. A leader and a pioneer, Connie compiled the first comprehensive book on violence against women in Canada, “No Safe Place. Violence Against Women and Children”. She was instrumental in launching the Assaulted Women’s Helpline, developed and taught the first UTSC course on Violence and Safety, created the Women’s Campus Safety Audit Guide for the Metropolitan Action Committee on Violence Against Women and Children, facilitated large scale safety audits and conducted training to train-the –trainer in cities across Canada, and developed “Kid Safe: A Kid’s Guide to Community Safety” which was distributed to 400000 homes in the Greater Toronto Area in the Toronto Star. Guberman was a member of City of Toronto’s Safe City Committee, Task Force on Community Safety, the Working Group on the Status of Women and Gender Equity as well as a member of the Interdepartmental Working Group on Community Safety that produced “Building on Success: A Community Safety Strategy for the City of Toronto”. United Nations, New York, 14 September 2010 – Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today named former Chilean president Michelle Bachelet to head United Nations Women (UN Women), a newly created entity to oversee all of the world body’s programmes aimed at promoting women’s rights and full participation in global affairs. The new body — which will receive a large boost in funding and become operational in January — merges four UN agencies and offices: the UN Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM), the Division for the Advancement of Women (DAW), the Office of the Special Adviser on Gender Issues, and the UN International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (UN-INSTRAW). Ambassador Verveer shared her vast experiences and knowledge to deliver an important message about women throughout the world. She described how far they have come, but also how far they still must go. President Barack Obama appointed Melanne Verveer as Ambassador-at-Large for Global Womens Issues. The Presidents decision to create a position of Ambassador-at-Large for Global Womens Issues is unprecedented, and reflects the elevated importance of these issues to the President and his entire Administration. In her capacity as director of the Department of States new office on Global Womens Issues, Ambassador Verveer coordinates foreign policy issues and activities relating to the political, economic and social advancement of women around the world.
