Question by incuwallus: What kind of a career can you get with a bachelors degree in a field not in your specific degree?
A year ago I received a Bachelors Degree in Geography in the State of Michigan. I relocated to Flagstaff, AZ because I love the state and want to reside here long term. I’m having a problem finding specific jobs in the field of Geography (ie, Planning, GIS, Cartography, etc.) without possessing a Masters Degree of even a Doctorate. The problem is I’m burnt out from my undergrad still and have no desire to go back to school (especially grad school) and put myself even farther into college loan debt than I already am.
I currently live in Flagstaff on my parents couch, and as you can imagine, as a 26 year old that’s just trying to get into my own place and become self relient, it drives me nuts living with them lol. I also have decided to start narrowing my “career” search (not job search, career search. I’m looking for a little better than working an hourly job at Subway) into the Phoenix area as it is a larger city with more career opportunities, currently a relatively low cost of living and of course, I like the year round warmth as well
I was just wondering what kind of career opportunities one can dive into that require a Bachelor’s Degree, but not necessarily in a Geographic related field. I’ve looked into property management and real estate, and thats something I might possibly pursue. Other then that, what other kinds of options are available for someone with a Bachelor’s Degree of any kind? Thank you for your help!
I should probably mention that when I came to Flagstaff, I did attempt to start a graduate certificate at NAU, but found out the program wasn’t very beneficial for me, so I’ve decided to look for something instead. I Haven’t been sitting on my parents couch, being lazy, eating potato chips and blowing money or anything like that.

Sorry, but most employers don’t care enough about a degree for you to use it to get jobs outside of what you received your degree in. You might very well have to work somewhere like Subway, especially if you have spent a year not working. Work experience is the most important thing to employers, and it sounds like you don’t have any recent work experience. Employers discriminate against people who haven’t worked in months when hiring.
If you think you can get a job in real estate, then that might be your best bet. The only other thing you can get a job in that wouldn’t be a minimum wage-type of job would be sales-related things, i.e. insurance companies, car sales and places like Enterprise Rent-A-Car.
